The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a major honors show approaches, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
